Winter Solstice

Solstice marks the end of year’s deep darkening
cold increases, blizzards blow, but all the while
light returns, inching toward summer in increments
even an unaided eye can measure.
Solstice night, perfect night, long enough to hold it all
vigil, bonfire, meditation, celebration, sleep, dreamtime.
Time to eat, drink, make merry love, sober up
and do it all again before dawn even thinks of breaking.

Tonight, the darkest hour comes early and stays late
pausing each midnight chime long enough
to call up Night’s dark divas . Hecate, Kali
Ishtar, Ix Chel, Nyx, Cerridwen,
the-ones-who-stir-the-pot, pull dream, desire
and blatant possibility
from thunder clouds of chaos and necessity.

Feed them blood, milk, honey
poured across the cairn of stones
that mark a triple crossroad.
Leave their black dogs a meaty scrap of bone.
The mothers will guide you back and forth
across the veiled boundaries between worlds.

Praise their unfathomable wisdom.
Praise the Mystery they serve.
Praise the baby, born on Solstice Night,
expelled from dark into returning light.
